“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” –Margaret Mead
Welcome back, I hope you had a great summer! I am very excited to have your child in my class as a student. We have a lot planned for the 2014-2015 school year. Below is some information to help you become familiar with the routine of my classroom.
Spelling
In my classroom each student has his/her individualized spelling contract. This is based on his/her level. Students’ will write their words on a spelling contract every Monday. This contract will be sent home every night but needs to return to school every day. The spelling homework for the week can be found attached to the spelling contract. Remember to study your words every night!
Reading
In my classroom my reading program consists of individualized phonics and guided reading groups. Each child is on his/her reading level and will read with me and in a group throughout the week. They will answer comprehension questions as well as higher level thinking questions. They will get new vocabulary words on a weekly basis. As a class we will also read together and participate in whole group discussions and complete grammar practice. Readers Workshop will play an important role during our reading time as well.
Writing
We will be using Writer’s Notebooks as well as Reader’s Response Journals. Your child will be taking this home periodically throughout the school year.
Math
We will be touching on many different concepts this year. Depending on the concept or level of difficulty math homework will be given throughout the week as needed. Please continue to study basic math facts with your child.
Contact Information:
The parent-teacher relationship is vital to your child's success in school. By working together, we can help your child have a very fulfilling learning experience. Please feel free to contact me my phone or e-mail [email protected].
I look forward to a wonderful year ahead!
